I was Enjoying my sunday afternoon at home then i got "the call" from
a client(from out of town) in which i had done work for just this past
friday.

The producer described the problem as "audio cutting in and out" at a
particular critical moment during the dialogue. We were shooting with
a sony 24p 900 camera and the producer insisted that i do not do a
double system record. I warned of horror stories and my opinion was
quickly dismissed.

My question to the group: Has anybody actually heard what it sounds
like when the audio dropout problem occurs in these cameras? Is it a
full mute or something else? Can anybody confirm that this problem
actually exists?

Potentially, i am about to face a firestorm over this and appreciate
any help that can be offered. If it is desired to speak off the NG
then email me directly. jgoochmixer.DeleteThis@mac.com or even call me collect
at 610.627.1495

please no advice about what i should of done, i consider and have
always considered these cameras an abomination to the sound department
and have always fought for double system recording. Next time i will
win the fight.

sincerely,

john gooch

Sounds to me like your rear end is covered and the producers will have
learned an expensive lesson if in fact you did forewarn and offer a backup
and it was refused.

John,

You did your part in telling them of the potential problems. They did
not take your professional advice. How this could be a fire storm for
you is beyond reason and comprehension.

A lack of planning and forethought on their part does not constitute a
crisis on your part.

Stand your ground, do not become the whipping boy for them.

Best, Eric

There are two issues. One is a complete mute of the audio and the other
sounds like RF hits. I know from speaking to a person that owns six or seven
of the F-900s that the RF hit problem has been a challenge for him in
several of his cameras. He has linked it to a card inside the camera that
needs to be reset each time the camera is transported and was having a
meeting with the president of Sony USA a few weeks ago to discuss this
issue. I haven't heard from him since then.

I have myself experienced the muting and am not aware of a fix for this. I
think the solution will be that Sony is about to release a new camera.
Hopefully it will work properly.

If you haven't already, do a search of the archive on this subject.
Among others, both Wolf S and Glen Trew have reported problems
with strong RF causing mutes in the audio of the F900 that were
not audible in E-to-E. As far as I can see, Sony has been in denial
about this for at least 2 years.

No, you can't hear it happen. None of these cameras have true confidence
monitoring so you only hear the sound E/E through the camera but not what
goes to tape.

To answer Oleg, they were always single camera with no sync box, yet there were
the occasional problems. These were LONG sit down interviews mostly, things
could get cut around, but that doesn't make it right, of course.

Hi John,

So far I've had the dumb luck of never running into "the 900 problem",
but I too am always pressing hard for the producer to at least pay for
a non-time code DAT backup, only to be told that "we can't afford it".
Always.

A local mixer I know who HAS run into this problem with the 900 is
already doing just as you suggest, and is now running DAT backups,
even if it's just a PCM-M1 in his bag, when the producer refuses to
pay for the backup.

If he ever gets "that call" again, he'll be ready to sell some VERY
EXPEN$IVE DAT COPIE$ that he just happens to have available, even
though the producer didn't want them.

I think I should be doing the same.
