Post subject: New SUPER 8 collector, I have some questions on super 8 please help
Archived from groups: alt>movies>cinematography>super8 (more info?)

Hi there,

I am a new super 8 collector fan, and wow what a beutiful hobby.

But with little o no backgound knowlage i have begun the wonderful
adventure.

First of all:

I have bout my second super 8 film projector, the first being a simple
silent 18fps projector, which was quite simple to master but my new
Chinon sound sp-350, comes with no manual. so I have a few doubts.

1) does anybody have a scan of this or similar model projector manual

2) This projector has a S-O-S knob what does this do and mean??? it
can be set on normal be regualted. also on record when it is set on
normal the a light turns on??

3) this projector has 2 5pin plug conectors one labeled line out 1-2
and the other aux.

- what is the aux plug fr ??? I gues its a line in for audio for
recording am i right??
and what is the pin lineout so i can make a rca adptor.

- what is the line out 1-2 5 plug din line out so I can also make an
rca audio plug adaptor. (when i opem it it has a yellow cable on pin 3
a blue cable on pin 5 and a black wire on pin 2) which ones are line 1
and line 2 and ground

finally a question on comercial sould films like ken films from the
70´s and 80's

I noticed that these sound films like star wars or close encounters i
bought of ebay seem to have the sound only recorded on the track 1 of
the film and the second track is empty. or so it seems

question:

1) is this true that these comercially sold films like ken films or
castle fims only have sound recorded on track 1, and if this is so
these would only mono sound.? or can the track 1 have stereo sound??

2) is it possible to re-record the sound on these films to make them
stereo, with the track 1 with the right sound and the second track with
the left sound?

thanks for the help guys

For the most part, yes, only mono sound. There were/are some films produced
by Derann films that have a stereo soundtrack.

Yes, I've read of people doing so, but I question the wisdom of doing it.
It sounds difficult to me, and I would think it would be easier to sync up a
digital edit of the soundtrack than try and fuss around with re-recording on
the magnetic stripes.

Let me put in a plug here for the currently published magazine "Super 8
Today." (www.super8today.com)

It is a slick-paper quarterly with an emphasis on current Super 8 activity,
but it genuflects toward the history of the format--including Steve
Osborne's excellent column, "A View From The Collector's Coroner." In the
current issue we can read of Derann's present releases (some incorporating
stereo tracks) and their web site: www.derann.com.

I wish people who think film is dead would do a little research before
posting.

And I wish I had spell-checked before posting "coroner" instead of
"corner."

Who said anything about film being dead?
