Michael,
This is an option for you, but only if you have a DEVA. If not, well
then never mind....
I have had the MX-12 / DEVA V combo for 5 weeks. I have had so much
fun playing with it.
Wow, it really "opens up the DEVA". Yes, if the DEVA dies, I will have
to swap out the whole
"combo", but, I feel it's worth the chance. I mean, if I was worried
about the DEVA V failing, I
would have not bought the DEVA V in the first place. I feed my PD4
with the DEVA digital
outputs. The PD4 is working great. I look at like the DEVA is the
mixer, really. I am sending
audio out to: Clients, Boomers, Video Assist, a Speaker on my cart,
and two Eng. Crew's . Now,
if I had any other recorders , or anything else that would take a
digital output, I have 6
more outputs waiting. I got the external slate mic. working great this
week. The MX-12 has a
really neat feature, when you use a button, like the talk back to
boomers, the channel lights up,
that the audio is routed out of, on that buss. Now you always have a
visual check of where your
functions are going. ( and not going). I also like not having a lot of
buttons on the panel, that I
might hit by mistake, during the take.... It's so easy to know where
my talkback to director, or
boomers are during the shot. Well, I have been giving this combo a
work out. Just finished 4
weeks of : " wide and tight", director changing everything at the
last minute, 6 - 8 Mic.'s up at
any time. Kid actors who are ad-libbing all the time. A director who
is yelling action right after
telling the actors to change everything, and every time before the
camera has been even
slated......You know, a lot of bang for the buck. Also, I also wanted
to mention that I am really
loving the sound of this set up. It's flawless. Headroom up the
Yazooo. As well as I never
worry about having enough battery life for my system. That's really a
relief for me on set. Now,
the MX-12 only weighs like 8.5 LB., so my cart is a lot lighter right
now. We did a company
move, and I just left the cart power on. The small power usage is a
great help on set. I love how
easy it is to use. I am really loving having 1 spot to look at for
options like: phase reversal,
routing, etc. Working at a great speed , the screen is so easy to
make changes on. I never have
to remember anything, it's laid out so clearly. Great for life under
the gun. Also, I do not think
you will find any mixing panel cheaper if you are using a DEVA. My
first setting up the
software had the DEVA freeze up, but now it is working great, and has
not done it again. I love
having the "pre fader" meter strips on the panel, because I can tell
when a radio mic has been
turned on, and I can check it. Great when you have 6-8 mic.'s up, and
knowing when a boomer
has plugged in on a XLR . It's really easy to change between line
level, mic., 48 power, delay,
etc. I had a lot of music playback on my show, with different
playback operators. Getting music
feeds was really easy, sometimes through a radio mic., and sometimes
through XLR cable. The
Yamaha is a great option, but I looked at the power consumption, and
thought it was too much
for use in independent films for me. Best of luck with whatever you
choose.
And the next time you are in an interview, and they tell you they care
about sound, have them
put it in writing....
PS, this option will not work for you if you do not own a DEVA, Thanks
Coleman
