Having just seen the trailers for AVP, they look fairly good, but something
concerns me. I know Alien, and indeed Predator are pretty big cash cows,
but (theres always a "but"). Films arent what they used to be, there was a
time when Sci-Fi films were just that, sci fi. The first 2 Alien films were
never intended for mass audiences, they were just two great films.
Nowadays, before a film s even considered the "money men" have to be
satisfied that it stands a good chance of making shed loads at the cinema.
This can seriously hamper how a film is made, cos in order to make money it
has to appeal to "joe public". So, will this comprimise AVP's integrity?
Judging by the trailers i have seen, the film seems to start "eye candy"
actors (which film nowadays actually has anyone ugly in it?) and actresses
and be very action based. This is ok, but something has to give to get the
mass audience. I just hope that this film proves to be good and not just
another Fox Corp money making venture. I could go on for ever about this,
cos i feel strongly about decent move franchises being bled to death for the
sake of money.

Completely and utterly disagree that Alien and Aliens were never meant for a
wide audience. The fact that it's FOX we're talking about is all the
evidence you need that these movies were intended to make money. Even
casting Ripley as a female was an attempt to appeal to a broader (and
female) audience, given that Ripley was originally to be cast as a guy.

Let's just be grateful that the movie is being made at all, because the
amount of humming and haying done over the AVP franchise was starting to
look like it was heading towards a dead end. Another bonus is that it looks
like they've spent money on this this movie, rather than making it some
low-budget, low-expectations venture.

Then there's the point that Predator is an action character, not
shakespeare. There's never going to be a multi-layered, deep and twisting
plot to an AVP movie. In fact, I can't think of anything worse than making a
potential action-fest like AVP into a boring 'talky' movie. AVP is all
about action, action, action. Anyone who wants deep, meaningful plot
development should avoid a movie that is all about burning, raping and
pillaging.

From what I've seen (The latest trailer in particular) it looks likeit's
going to be a damn fine movie.

Really? My impression was that Alien was Fox's "big movie of the summer"
in 1979?

As two others have already commented, both Alien and Aliens were
obviously made "to make money". (What "Hollywood" movie isn't?)
Alien was OK'ed to take advantage of the Star Wars craze, just like
AvP was (probably) given the green light (finally) because of the
success of Freddy vs Jason.

What seperates the good from the bad & ugly are the people who *create*
the movies. We got very, very lucky for the first two films to get dozens
(maybe hundreds) of talented and creative people who produced two
masterpieces of film, based on two excellent scripts.

A3 and AR had great people working on the projects, but were pretty
much doomed from the start by horrible scripts. I think both films are
enjoyable *because* of the talent overcoming *some* of that weakness.

For AvP we'll have to see if the same is true, because I'm not too impressed
by the "story". Just check your brain at the door like I'm going to! :-)

Unfortunately, in Hollywood, talent doesn't always equal money, and
money doesn't always equal talent. Until people "just say no" to overhyped
films like, say Armegeddon, we'll continue to get "brainless" action flicks.
But that's not all bad, because some people really enjoy them, I guess.
Whatever gets you through the day . . .

Have a great day!

Just to be nitpicky for the fun of it . . . :-)

O'Bannon wrote all of the parts to fit either male or female roles.

His original script is a very interesting read!
