As two others have already commented, both Alien and Aliens were
obviously made "to make money". (What "Hollywood" movie isn't?)
Alien was OK'ed to take advantage of the Star Wars craze, just like
AvP was (probably) given the green light (finally) because of the
success of Freddy vs Jason.
What seperates the good from the bad & ugly are the people who *create*
the movies. We got very, very lucky for the first two films to get dozens
(maybe hundreds) of talented and creative people who produced two
masterpieces of film, based on two excellent scripts.
A3 and AR had great people working on the projects, but were pretty
much doomed from the start by horrible scripts. I think both films are
enjoyable *because* of the talent overcoming *some* of that weakness.
For AvP we'll have to see if the same is true, because I'm not too impressed
by the "story". Just check your brain at the door like I'm going to! :-)
Unfortunately, in Hollywood, talent doesn't always equal money, and
money doesn't always equal talent. Until people "just say no" to overhyped
films like, say Armegeddon, we'll continue to get "brainless" action flicks.
But that's not all bad, because some people really enjoy them, I guess.
Whatever gets you through the day . . .
Have a great day!
