It's like saying "no trespassing". If it is allowed, it's not
trespassing. The trouble is, people get used to seeing that notice
without quite paying attention to what it means and shortly convince
themselves that copying any movie is legal.
There's a sign in a local Y saying "Not Responsible for Lost or Stolen
Items". I imagine this means "Please don't sue us if your stuff gets
lost or stolen"
I figure a sign that says "NO ADMITTANCE, AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY"
applies to authorized personnel only, not to me. >> Stay informed about: OK |

I can't know that unless someone tells me. But you do
suggest a larger point, that maybe we should be kinder
to one another, not knowing what personal griefs we may
be bearing.

In the present instance with 'No Man', he called me stupid
because I asked if he was serious when he said that he copied
my statement for all to see.
In this thread in general, one or two people have said that
we are authorized to make DVD copies of our VHS tapes,
in spite of what the prominent warnings seem to be saying.
I don't think that question has really been settled. I make
such copies simply because I want to, but I was curious
about when and if it would be legal. All this thread has done
is make a viewpoint known to me that I had never heard
before. This being the internet, which we all know is rife
with misinformation, it would be a bit naive and gullible, even
for me, to accept what I've been told here without question.
But I don't deny that it's true either. >> Stay informed about: OK |

One person called you stupid, and I think you have to give him a break,

not that you believed something that wasn't true. It was that you continued

No, one person has *cited the relevant statute* that demonstrates that
you are authorized to make DVD copies of your VHS tapes and at least one
other made a reference to copyright law in general.

Tell me a lie and I'm going to believe you, unless I have a
reason not to believe you. I don't plan to change that, no
matter how many times you slap your forehead.

Often there are conflicting statutes. This thread opened up
to me a new possibility of what the truth is, and that should
be enough, I think. >> Stay informed about: OK |

Well, lets see . . . how many ways is that statement wrong?
First, Wal-Mart doesn't sell everything they can. They heavily censor
their CD selection, for instance, which is fine; nobody with a brick and
mortar store is going to sell every CD that comes out. You probably
aren't going to find any kind of specialty item there.
And of course "this country dominated by evil capitalists" is just
bullshit.
And when you assumed up there, you made an 'ass' out of 'you' although
not, in this case, me.
I can think of all sorts of reasons stuff that's legal isn't sold. A
big one would be that it's just too expensive to start up. Or you can't
convince somebody upstream they should bother. Or you don't have the
clout to push something else off the shelves -- stores don't have empty
shelves, just waiting for the next big thing. They're full up, and to
add your product, something has to go.
So, okay, every part of that statement was wrong.

There's a story in our town about that Civil War going down. And lots of
scum rose up in that cesspool, as in other wars, which is the very
reason for the present one. And into our village loped a scoundrel, now
made a captain of a squad of horse in the rebel army. And our fearless
and plainspoke blacksmith, an eldery gent with the modern name of C C
Ridings, scoffed at the new officer openly. "Why, he's nothing but a
hossthief who has been ridden out of the territory!"
So the newly-minted officer rode into the blacksmith shop with three
horse under arms and proclaimed, "Sir, I don't appreciated bein' called
a hossthief," whereupon Mr Ridings replied, "Sir, I'd suggest you stop
stealing horses."
The best moral for this story is:

Sounds a little pervy to me, but hey, I do my own cooking from scratch
or go to a restaurant with waiters and some concept of what food
actually looks and tastes like.

No, it means that it's equally illegal to burn a movie to DVD and
sell it on the streets of New York as it is to put it on Bitorrent
for free.

I had seen his allusion to The Odyssey, but I have been conditioned
not to make anything out of quotations in people's sigs. I once
made a reference to one of your sigs, and you chastized me for
doing so, even though I believe that your rotation of them is not
random.
I also knew that Odysseus was away from home for a decade or
more, the length of time of the seige of Troy, plus the time of
his extended voyage home.
You can pretend that I don't know these things if you like, just
as you pretended that I didn't know that Starbuck was a
character in Moby Dick, not matter how many times I protested.
Once you have decided to grind my neck into the mud with
your jackboot, with your goose-stepping cronies all cheering
you on, there's nothing I can do to stop you.
The fact is, though, that when you said the person calling me
stupid hadn't seen his wife and son in a decade, the Odyssey
reference didn't pop into my mind, nor when you slapped your
forehead. You seem to think that my mind should be tuned
in to your mental connections; simply because it is YOU, I
suppose. I'm not tuned in to the way you think, and I don't
want to be. You are a horrible person, in my estimation, for
whom your massive ego justifies whatever you choose to do.
