Can anyone explain the difference (if any) between BWV-P files as
delivered by the Cantar and
those created by a Deva 5.8? A potential client has been using Cantar
files and wants to also accept poly files recorded by a Deva. Thanks!

Please read the Cantar user guide page 39 for more information

http://www.aaton.com/products/sound/cantar/usermanual.php

The Cantar file structure natively records .wav mono files. In order
to deliver .wav poly files you have 2 choices.
#1 Poly Native (keeps all tracks in the original placement)
#2 Poly Rotate (rotates tracks 7 & 8 two tracks 1 &2 and pushes
tracks 1-6 up one track or rotates 8 to track one and pushes tracks
1-7 up one track count depending on which mix setting you choose)

The Deva file system records MARF files and then post record converts
MARF to your choice of file format.

Scott is a Cantar owner and is not really answering your question in
regards to the Deva and the type of BWF files it can deliver.
"The Deva file system records MARF files and then post record converts
MARF to your choice of file format."

MARF files are natively recorded to the internal hard drive of the
Deva 4, 5 and 5.8

The Deva allows you to mirror to a DVD-RAM in 4 BWF formats:

WAV MONO files (BWF-M).
This creates a separate WAV file for each track recorded. When using
this option with UDF formatted
DVD-RAM discs, the files and discs may not be readable on Mac OS
computers.

WAV MONO F files
This format is a custom format to ensure recorded audio will playback
correctly on Fostex DV40
equipment.

WAV POLY (BWF-P) files.
This creates a single file combining all the tracks recorded - This is
the most requested format, compatible for editing in both the AVID and
ProTools.
Only the tracks "armed" will be mirrored to the DVD-RAM (and internal
hard drive). They will be in the order of the original track
assignments. There is no "Rotating" of tracks.

Wav Poly F files
This format is a single file combining all the tracks recorded with
the custom changes necessary to
playback correctly on a Fostex DV40

Hopefully I have added some information for you. It would also be
helpful if you asked your client how he used the Cantar files and what
editing system he will use them in.

Hi Ben,

I think the biggest difference that will be seen in the 'delivered'
files will be the file names.

If I remember correctly Cantar filenames are long (shouldnt be a
problem) - I expect that Scott will chime in here and remind us of how
they work!

Deva filenames are short, and are of the form:-

FFFFSSS_t.wav

Where FFFF= The Folder name or number
SSS = the Segment no. (starts at 1 in a new folder and goes up by 1
each time you hit the record button)
t= track no.

Dont worry about the MARF business at all - it is backroom stuff that
Deva does and you should never, ever see a MARF file other than inside
a Deva. The DVD-RAM, or CF card, or HDD that you burn to from a Deva
will only ever have .wav files on it.

The BWF-F files that can be burned on a Deva were a fiddle which was
to do with a software glitch on Fostex DV40 machines which many
syncing up/post houses used to use (or maybe still do). If the DV40
saw a sample rate flag faster than 48k (i.e. 48.048) it would assume
that the files were recorded at 96k. It would play them back at half
speed. The fiddle that Zaxcom did with BWF-F files was to stamp a
48.048 file with a 48k sample rate flag, that would fool the Fostex
into playing the file at the correct speed - well it was something
like that anyway!!

The Cantar (or it might in fact be that nifty bit of software that you
can get for it) does this neat trick, where you can record your mix to
trax 7&8 on the Cantar, but when you make your deliverable it renames
trax 7 &8 as trax 1&2 and bumps all the other track names up by 2.
This is a clever trick for luddites such as myself - I like to see mic
IP 1 on track/meter no 1, mic 2 on track 2 etc.. This means that I
like to put my mix on 9&10 (in the case of Deva) or 7&8 (in the case
of a Cantar). Post Prod of course like to get the mix on 1, or 1&2,
hence this neat Cantar trick. None of this, however, need bother you,
and is of no relavance to the files as deliverables!!

Kindest regards,

Simon B
