MY CHOICE IS Bundaberg Root Beer. It is brewed by Bundaberg Brewed
Drinks Pty Ltd in Bundaberg , Queensland ,Australia. They state that
"it is traditionally brewed to a genuine old recipe from sarsaparilla
root, licorice root, vanilla beans and molasses..an authentic taste
of yesteryear from our family-owned brewery".....

My family likes the Bundaberg Ginger Beer. Ah-HOO-ah! Big chunks of
ginger. Hard to find in the U.S., but occasionally it shows up at Cost
Plus World Market. But rarely when watching silent films. Usually
there it's bottled water, during those rare gaps where the other
instrumentalists are covering all the notes and the pianist can
rest :-)

When watching movies with the family, the rest of whatever wine was
served at dinner is often perfect.

My own spit.

The last few silents I saw were at the Redford Theatre, MI. I got home in
time before the liquor stores closed down, however.

Leinenkugel Original ...really cold. That beer may be hard to get outside
the Midwest. Brewed in Wisconsin.

When it's hot I love a good root beer. The best local one here is
called Sprechers.
When it's cold, a big mug of hot cocoa -- flavored with raspberry,
caramel or mint.

Hot chocolate goes especially well with Harold Lloyd movies and a
handful of clementine oranges.

A lot depends on the film:

A Keystone? Keystone beer.

A Chaplin Keystone? Two Buck Chuck.

Mack Sennett? Boilermaker.

James Finlayson? Scotch Sour.

Harold Lloyd? A Diddlebock. That's bock as in beer.

Harry Langdon? Virgin Cola.

Buster Keaton? Damfino -- but you wake up straitjacketed in an asylum.

Fairbanks drinking game? Every time Doug smiles or leaves the ground.

"The Mystery of the Leaping Fish"? Coke!

"Die Nibelungen: Siegfried"? Wounded Dragon.

Clara Bow? Redheaded Slut.

Norma Shearer? Naked Girl Scout.

Olive Thomas? Assisted Suicide.

Mary Pickford? Shirley Temple.

William Haines? Fruit Smoothie.

Charles Gemora? Chunky Monkey.

Soviet propaganda? Red Bull.

Sea epics? Windjammer.

Lubitsch comedies? Champagne, extra dry.

John Ford comedies? Nutty Irish Coffee.

"City Lights"? I'll have whatever that millionaire is having.

Sounds like it's just us silent fans in Michigan that enjoy real
spirits with fine classic films.
When sitting down to watch a really good drama, especially some of
those French films that were featured during the first months, I pour
myself a nice big glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. "Le Terre" and
"Craiqubeille" and also Murnau's "City Girl," all go very well with a
glass of fine wine.
If I'm watching "The Passion of Joan of Arc," I usually drink the
whole bottle (no wonder that film is a favorite of mine).

Now, that's an idea that might help those that are not very fond of this
classic.

Gilbert Roland? Mexican Coke.

Come to think of it, I normally drink Mexican Coke, except when I'm
with Frederica, when we split a bottle of Absinthe.

Mike S.
(actually, it's the sugar I like--in both cases)

Tea drinking during private cinema showings in your own abode (ahhh, the
luxuries of the rich- I imagine your velvet draped chamber) may be an
exquisite think, but I would not reccomend it for your attendance at film
festivals, Herr Count. The caffeine content of that tea has a diuretic
property, tending to draw water from the body - in the language of the
common people, Tea Makes You Pee.

Might be useful for a programme of short films though.......
