Post subject: dropped Philips plasma, can I fix it?
Archived from groups: uk>media>home-cinema (more info?)

Hi,

I have a Philips plasma TV 42FD9944/01S which has been dropped and the
plasma screen cracked. Please can you help with my questions:

I'm not sure whether to get it repaired or to have a go and try to fix
it myself. From observation only it looks like the plasma is cracked
and the bottom of the silver casing is damaged slightly. But who knows
what other damage has been done inside? I don't want to claim on my
insurance.

When I turn the unit on, the power light comes on red and stays on
without blinking. There is no sound or anything else to report.

Q1. How much does it cost to buy a 2nd hand replacement screen?
Q2. Does any repair company offer a free diagnostic on the TV, before
repairing?
Q3. Do you know where to source good cheap parts?

Generally if anybody has any experience of fixing these things I would
be exremly grateful for any pointers you could offer, eg where to
source good cheap parts; other things that could be wrong.

I really want to fix this myself or get it fixed, but I don't
particularly want to change parts piecemeal only to find it would have
been cheaper to buy a new one.

Thanks for your help.

Regards
Richie

How strange.
That is what people with good insurence policies would do, no piont of
having insurence if claims not made.
Most if not all insurence policies offer accidental damage as an extra
premium, but the ones I've seen cover TV sets even if the extra option not
taken
I would claim on the insurence.
Just think if you mend it and later on it catches fire, and your house burns
down, total loss. And the insurence company do not pay out due to them not
knowing about the TV now.

It will be cheaper to bin it and buy a new one.

Claim on the insurance , that's what it's for

The question has to be asked as to why you don't want to claim on your
insurance for accidental damage?

Cos it was 'dropped' rather hurriedly on the way out of someone else's
house?
