Lee,
I was devotee of the 416 for about 20 years -- it is a workhorse and I
consider it still the standard for TV news. To me, it is always a bit
bright in the vocal frequencies, which makes it a good news/documentary
mic. As TV moved away from a 3 inch speaker and into the digital age,
I changed microphones.
For a short shotgun, I now use the Neumann KMR 81. It is warmer than
the 416 and not as "peaky" to my old tired ears. It has been my
experience that the KMR 81 mixes well with my Schoeps. My kit is long
shotgun, KMR 82: short shotgun, KMR 81: hypercardiod, Schoeps.
As a favor, I recently boomed for a mixer buddy of mine and his weapon
of choice was a MKH 50. I was favorably impressed with the mic. We
had difficult, noisy locations and two 16 mm cameras and I felt the mic
performed admirably. I would love to conduct a side by side comparison
with the Schoeps and the MKH 50 in a controlled environment.
As I've said before in this room, microphones are like women and
handguns, pick what works for you and go with it. I happen to like
women who are big and loud -- and, yea, hanguns too.
