Hello all,

This is a link to a youtube video of something shot a few years ago...
I had never seen it before this morning. We were to do an
aproximately 16 minute steadicam tracking shot. I recorded some dialog
at the head and then did playback from a golf cart in front of the
subject... or just running on foot. This was at 8am on a Sunday in
the French Quarter... I could not use big speakers or an earwig for
playback... A Cafe Au Lait and some Beignets to the first correct
guess as to where playback is coming from ;)

Jazzologically,

jeff

Maybe you are correct about the basket. To think that I though they were
shooting from a low rider air shock equipped square back with the entire
body of the car acting as a thump speaker for sync! Stupid me.

Audiofile gets the prize... a pignose batt powered amp fed via a
lectro 190 from an ibook...

Charles... I would not know where to start other than it was a young
ambitious director and a lot of enthusiasm. Ben Jaffe, now the owner
op of preservation hall funded it (well)... the concept was to have
one continous shot where clint the waiter realizes he forgot to bring
the coffee to the table... so he brings it to preservation hall on his
bike... this was all done in three takes, real time. When he gets on
the bike... the band hauls butt over to Preservation hall (15 blocks
away) sets up playing, just in time for clint to deliver the cup o
joe... this was some logistic planning that for once was "right on"

we had a motorcycle escort, two golf carts with a step up ramp for the
stedicam op and a couple diffused 1ks... I had originally thought I
would use my regular playback system of JBL Eons or just an earbud...
the director did not want any chance of seeing the earbud... and I was
not about to blamed for parading through the quarter at 8am on a
Sunday blaring music from a portable PA... the idea of using the batt
powered amp/speaker came to me the day before at the pre pro
meeting... I wish I had a smaller RAP powered speaker at the time as
the bag looks conspicously large for my taste... I'm surprised it
worked as well as it did with as few edits... too bad it just could
not be done with zero edits as originally intentioned... the footage
is both ramped and slowed hence 16min fits in a little over five...
(don't ask me, I'm not THAT creative)... at least the director had
generated ramped and slowed bits of the song for playback... It was
shot with a Varicam or Digibeta ( I can't remember ) but it was a
heavy master series steadicam rig and the op lost a few pounds
sweating that day... I did as well... 3am call...out at 9:30am.

A really fun Shoot... something a bit different for me and a
challenge. Now Clint is moving up to bigger and better things... he
really was delivering food for Fiorella's when I met him... now he
tours with the Preservation Hall band singing and playing tenor sax...
Mr John, who he brought the coffee to, has moved on to the celestial
gig in heaven...

that would have been interesting on the 6ft wide ramps up to the
artillery park at the moonwalk... we were actually on foot at that
point (where the clowns appear first)

Easy, the playback is in the package in the carrier on the front of the
bike...
Nice boom shadow BTW.

"Nice Boom Shadow"... sheeze, nothing gets by you guys ;) I
personally thought the cart with the light trying to get out of the
shot at the end was the worst oops!... This thing was full of
"Errors" or "deviations" from the "plan"... what isn't ? Ty, we did
three takes, I got the tracks 15minutes before shooting. Opened a
window for each one (some were ramped, some slowed, and some at
29.ntsc...) I really didn't have a clue as to what was coming next,
but they were in order and the director (mad scientist) did give good
cues for the most part... some obvious glitches, but it was an epic
undertaking, given the lack of "Blocking" and the fact that our set is
a living historical neighborhood... I'm happy with it...sorta. ;)...
not a lot of five minute videos are shot in less than 8 hours and only
three takes... Good Coffee here ;)

Great work, Jeff. Perfect thing to watch this holiday weekend morning.

Was the playback track pitch corrected? Did you know when (and where) you
were going to ramp up and down?

How many takes did you guys do, Just One!?

I'll look you up next time I am in NOLA. It wasn't that hard to figure
out really. But a great use of a prop to get the job done.
