One of the local channels runs film clips between educational programs,
sometimes from silents like Uncle Tom's Cabin. I caught a brief clip
today. We see an elegant 20's exterior, lots of well dressed people.
There are posters of a beautiful woman- a strong jawed man looks at one.
the title (with translation) reads "Dioltia dances here tonight". (sorry
if I mis-spell the name) the man looks mournful and runs his hand
through his hair. Fade to title:" Later Dioltia re-enacted her Dance of
Desire". We see an art deco stage, the woman is wearing a russian
blouse, she looks quite passionate. She motions to a group of musicians,
and.......... HERE THEY CUT TO A PROGRAM!

What IS this film?

I should add that the title I saw on screen was in Russian.

You probably don't realize it, but this is a clip from the unfinished
Leni Riefenstahl epic, Dances with Salt for Svanetia (A Nazi Epic).

In this film, the German army marches into Russia, only to be thwarted
by the bad winter, but Herr Hitler comes in, Deus Ex Machina, and drops
salt (diverted from Svanetia) on the snow, melting it, causing a great
victory. (This of course is before Hitler was elected, proving that
Riefenstahl was in fact the evil Nazi conspirator we all suspected...
planting the seeds of war in the German people).

As in every silent film with snow and mountains in it, Riefenstahl
plays a dancer torn between two handsome guys, one of whom freezes to
death on a mountain for some reason we cease to care about after 4
hours of beautiful, but pointless, shots.

I'm told that Kino and Milestone are duking it out for DVD rights on
this one.

Eric (just adding that this is a complete farce for those not so
inclined to figure that out...)
