I am a 17 yr professional with camera and audio experience who is re-
entering the freelance arena. Any advice for rates? I would be using
client's gear.

What kind of camera/sound package does your client has? Anyhow, rates
vary from $2500 to $1300 per day around here...

Your client's rates are too low!!! Sorry old man!!! But as a cam op
or DP you should be in the vicinity of $700-900 a day for you!!! Good
sound recordists should be getting $500 a day for their services. If
you are forced into using a clients gear, that is between you and
them. You will also find that good sound types are going to be very
reluctant to use gear they do not own, maintain, know by heart,
etc.

Down here in Dallas, it is more like $1500 to $1800 for the two of us
and the soundperson is getting $650-700!!!

I guess Madison, WI is a small market situation...despite fairly high
cost of living:( There has been a fair amount of "thinning the herd"
going on the last few years. I hink a fair amount of the pnce
lucrative training market has gone to web apps. One can hope that the
youtube phenom will boost appreciation of video.
But you can see how lower rates coupled with sporadic work makes one
hesitant to invest a lot in gear. It seems around here, cam ops are
more likely to own their own gear..but not so much osund people. But
then, not many audio specialists around either.
But hey, stop calling me old, dangit. I'm a spry 41 and can keep up
with just about anyone..when my walker is tuned up.
