I would delete HEAVEN'S GATE and substitute THE CROWD (1928) or
HAROLD AND MAUDE (1971).
Maybe a distinction should be made between films that truly bombed
(AMBERSONS), and those that simply failed to recover their high
production costs quickly (DUCK SOUP).

"This is Spinal Tap " was a minor hit. It wasn't a wide-release film
though. I remember having to drive across town to the east-side of Detroit
to see it.

Seconds?? A search on IMDB turns up a lot of films with 'seconds'
in the title but no title of just 'seconds'

Both excellent.

It's a nice conventional picture, one of many competent actors could have
played the part instead of Welles, and probably done a better job. It's not
nearly as good a "hidden-evil-among-us" picture as Shadow of a Doubt. If
they had kept Wells's character's true nature a secret longer it might have
helped a bit.

And all three were war films that depended upon, and did not enjoy,
widespread foreign release the first time out. OZ, if you don't count
GWTW, which MGM merely distributed, was the highest grossing MGM film
of the 39-40 season. American audiences embraced all three of these
films (OZ, BAMBI & FANTASIA) but it wasn't until they had their wide
european releases after the war that they made money. >> Stay informed about: Program This Film Series |

It's hard to go wrong with a Frankenheimer film. And Howe can you
go Wong with a DP like that :-) Looking up on
IMDB this was one of his hottest periods - and I don't recall any
Frankenheimer film I've ever disliked.
One of the best things he's ever done IMO was when he was directing
live TV. "The Comedian" with Mickey Rooney and Mel Torme is one of the
best things I've seen - and I just watched it a month or so ago
after taping during a PBS broadcast on the 25th anniversary of it's
release. Too bad Torme never had any other parts that were as
great as that.
And Frankenheimers last TV effort - Path To War - was also good.
The re-edited Reindeer Games was a big improvement of the original
release.
Thanks for clarifying the title. I have it on order right now.

Be warned, this is a very devastating movie. If you're middle-aged, as I am,
it rings especially true. Having said that, however, it's also brilliant,
sad, and well worth watching.

And in this day and age what defines middle-aged. Today's middle
age used to be yesterdays old-geezer :-)
I don't know how I missed it the first time around - unless it
didn't play here. Looking at the Frankenheimer chronology
I saw ever film of hist first run from Birdman thru Grand Prix.
And my favorites were Seven Days in May and Manchurian Candidate.
Just recently the late departed Trio TV network ran his
The Iceman Cometh - with Lee Marvin. The 60's gave us some of his
best films, but in interviews he said he always enjoyed directing
live TV more.
