Nice try, Ed, but it's not us liberals who kick dogs and bark at old
ladies.

Well, Mel specifically: it's a line from DRACULA: DEAD & LOVING IT.

I realized that after I posted it. I've tried my darndest to block all
memory of D:D&LI from my conscious memory, but I've yet to be
completely successful at it.

If I had to choose, I'd probably agree with you. But that's damning
with *very* faint praise.

(but the Michigan J Frog homage in SPACEBALLS remains his single best
bit since HOTW-P1)

All it takes to be "part of the clique" at Cinecon is the price of
admission and an open mind.

Drat! I keep hitting the wrong key and sending my messages before
I'm finished writing. Curse google groups!

As I was saying, all it takes to be "part of the clique" at
Cinecon is the price of admission and an open mind. I partially quote
an unsolicited note from a first time Cinecon attendee: "I had the
MOST wonderful time at Cinecon! The movies were just fantastic (Well,
except Tom Thumb it was lame, and the comedy the last day was not
funny, rare I suppose, but not funny.) We particularly enjoyed the
atmosphere of the event. Its not overproduced, there are not corporate
sponsors crawling all over the place annoying you and sticking their
ugly logos all over everything, and there isnt a paid staff and nasty
little fund raisers making everything slicker than a Busby Berkley
movie. Just mostly a bunch of hobbyists and freaks showing movies!"

And a willingness to be insulted by festival organizers if they disagree
with your opinions. It's all part of the fun of sharing one's love of
movies with others.

Lloyd,

A person with an opinion, especially one who is determined to
share that opinion with others, ought to be willing to test that
opinion in the "marketplace of ideas." You have received criticism
from me and others for what we perceive to be a muddle-headed
expression of your cinematic theories, that doesn't mean we think
you're not a nice person or that you wouldn't be welcome here or
anyplace else. As for a Cinecon officer telling you to stay away, I
can't imagine who that might have been. I know that a couple of years
ago off list I specifically urged you to attend.

If we worried about people disagreeing with us, we'd never be
able to put on the festival because for every person that loves a
particular film there's someone else who thinks it's a buptke.

True dat. Each year we go through our attendee surveys, and you'd be
astounded how many pictures end up mentioned as BOTH "liked most" and
"liked least." It's all simply a matter of one's personal taste, and
we certainly don't expect everyone to like everything, but we do
expect every film to be liked by at least someone, and everyone to
like at least something.
