Last fall I showed some silent 8mm Laurel & Hardy's outside at a
cottage. It went over really well (phew!) and I've been asked to do
it again. Last year for music I was planning on using the Beau Hunks
recordings of Leroy Shields music but couldn't because the disc was in
deep storage as part of a house move.
I've found the disc now but am wondering if anyone has other
suggestions. Whatever I'll be showing it'll be a two-reel comedy from
Keaton, Chaplin, or Laurel & Hardy. >> Stay informed about: When you gotta drop that needle. |

Recordings by the Paragon Orchestra (teens-early 20's material) and
the Coffee Club Orchestra (20's-30's material) as well as Vince
Giordano's Nighthawks are all super for two-reelers. In addition to
LeRoy Shield, the Beau Hunks also recorded songs and cues by Roger
Roger and Raymond Scott. I'm sure there's stuff by Alloy and others
that can be pulled off DVD soundtracks for paring down. >> Stay informed about: When you gotta drop that needle. |

I favor the Scott Joplin rags as recorded by Joshua Rifkin, still available on
cd. >> Stay informed about: When you gotta drop that needle. |

I worshiped the Rifkin LP's when they first came out, but I've come to think
of them as over-careful. A healthy reaction to the Joe "Fingers" Carle
school, but now I like my Joplin with a little more life.

If you're looking for traditional music, why not go all the way and
get original recordings of ragtime and early jazz. I suggest that you
go on the web and look at the Antique Phonograph Show on radio station
WFNU, out of East Orange NJ (just across the river from NYC). The
show, which airs every week, actually puts a microphone in front of
wind up gramophone players. They don't play any music that was
recorded after recordings started using electricity (which I believe
was 1926). There is an archive of hundreds of shows to draw material
from, which is available free any time you want.
Other than that I suggest that you look at Document or Yazoo CDs.
They are companies that specialize in old music and have an
unbelievable wealth of early recordings. My favorite is a Document
Records CD called Jazz in St. Louis, 1929 - 1937. Of course I'm from
St. Louis, but even for somebody who didn't grow in this center of
ragtime and early jazz, this is an exceptional selection of music.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and especially to Ken for the heads
up on WFMU.
I have used old jazz recordings in the past too. I'm always surprised
at how the music and image naturally link up (must be something
similar to seeing images in clouds in the sky). I did it once for
some old home movies and people demanded to know how I matched stuff
up so well. They could hardly believe that I had just stuck a CD in
pretty much randomly and hit play.
Last year I used a Robert Paker compilation and that worked great
until a track with vocals started. That's distracting. >> Stay informed about: When you gotta drop that needle. |

Eric, were you thinking of Frankie Carle? Because it's Joe "Fingers" Carr,
whose real name was Lou Busch.
If you want a fascinating read, look him up in Google, and you'll find he
was married to Janet Blair and Margaret Whiting, and finally died in an auto
accident in 1979. >> Stay informed about: When you gotta drop that needle. |

The radio station is WFMU (not WFNU). Sorry about the mistyping.

I just got a VHS of TOM SAWYER, with a score by Maria Newman. I've
never heard her stuff before, and I can't wait to find out how I react
to it. Something tells me I won't hate it as much as others do on AMS

razzle-dazzle. >> Stay informed about: When you gotta drop that needle. |

I think that as music it has validity, but I don't think it's a good score.
She took a previously written string quartet and rearranged it- To me it
sounds very much as if she just cut and pasted a recording.

Years ago, quite by accident, I stumbled across a CD titled "Loose
Elbows: Susan Tomes Plays the Piano Music of Billy Mayerl." I had
never heard of Mayerl but I took a chance on the disc -- a 1989 Virgin
Classics release -- and found it to make absolutely perfect
accompaniment for silent comedies. Mayerl (1902-1959), for those who
don't know, was a British musician who composed such sprightly,
syncopated tunes as "Bats in the Belfry," "The Jazz Master," "Loose
Elbows," "Railroad Rhythm," and others. As a teenager, he accompanied
silent films at his local theatre, playing for up to five hours per
night, seven nights a week.
Inexplicably, the disc includes a number of non-Mayerl compositions,
including "Body and Soul," "Peg o' My Heart," and "Limehouse Blues."
But it's all great stuff, extremely well performed by Susan Tomes.
I've used this music countless times to score comedy shorts, and in
its own way it's every bit as good as the Leroy Shields/Marvin Hatley
stuff used in the Roach shorts. >> Stay informed about: When you gotta drop that needle. |
