I'm sure you all have had much experience with using microphones under
extreme conditions, so I was wondering if anyone here could recommend a pair
to take to South East Asia in late August. My experiences with my own
condenser mics is that even relatively small amounts of humidity cause them
to get very noisy. I have a pair of Countryman B3 mics that I plan on
taking, but I was considering maybe picking up a pair of nice cardioids or
hypercardioids to bring along, or better yet a mid/side stereo shotgun. A
few possibilities that look promising are the Sennheiser MKH-418S, Audio
Technica AT815ST and the Sanken CMS-2. Anyone here have any experience with
these, or can you suggest better options? Widest possible frequency
response and lowest self noise are desirable features, but resistance to
moisture is tops.

Thanks in advance!

I haven't had any problems with any of my MKH mics and humidity so far, but
the S capsule of the 418 is not as quiet as I would like. The is a lot more
noise than on the M capsule, but it's a nice mic and a rather compact
package even with the rycote on it. But it needs to have phantom to both M
and S side, even if you just use the M part or the out level will be a lot
lower.

i can tell you i did use a km184 (neumann fet mike) in "arabian hammam" ( 1rst room , warmless than two others)
without any problems , the sqn 4s failed before the mike ..

Hi Bob,

You didn't say what sort of directional mic you have, but I've had my Schoeps
mics in Ecuador, Panamá, Thailand and various North American downpours with good
luck. As you know, the MKH 50 has a little less self noise and I've used one of
those outdoors all day in a sleet storm with just a softie that I had to wring
water out of periodically....

Best,
John
