Much of that movie is weird for the sake of weird. I like the movie,
but haven't watched it in years. Is that what you mean by
"outlynching". Lynch is a lot more than just "weird". I'll take Blue
Velvet over Jodorowsky any day.

Why do you say that? I think I get the movie for the most part, and there's
a definite underlying meaning. I don't think the movie is "just weird for
weird's sake". Alot of people make that claim about "Lost Highway" and
"Mulholland Drive", you know. But they're wrong.
I think you're wrong about "Santa Sangre". How long ago did you see it?
By "out-Lynching Lynch", I meant being highly successful at blurring the
line between what's real and what's going on in a character's brain,
delivering ideas through symbols and the creation of moods, merging past
and present events, and creating a dream-like experience for the viewer.
I think "Santa Sangre" is a masterpiece, and if you like MD and LH, you
should see it. BTW, I saw "El Topo" (also by Jodorowsky) a few weeks ago,
and I didn't like it nearly as much. It was OK, but not among my favorites. >> Stay informed about: Out-Lynching David Lynch |

Perhaps you're right. I saw it when it was released. Must have been 89
or 90. I felt the mother/son stuff was in your face. Felt pretentious.
The "holy blood" swimming pool plus chanting, for example.
Maybe it deserves a second viewing (I wonder if I can find it on DVD
or video).
But as I think about the film, I now recall some striking images: The
elephant funeral-dumping. The guy pulling his ear off. And most
incredible, the dismemberment by the knife thrower and the chickens
digging in.

So far, I've only seen "El Topo" and "Santa Sangre".

I think you should definitely give it another look. If you can find it. It
appears that it is currently unavailable for sale. I found it at a local
video store that strives to provide *everything* - and I think they really
do have everything.
I think the whole movie is visually impressive. I like the music, too. The
movie seems to me like a David Lynch version of "Psycho". >> Stay informed about: Out-Lynching David Lynch |

Started watching "The Holy Mountain". Just stopped watching about 2/3
through.
Now that movie is weird and pretentious.
Are you sure you aren't mixing them up? Or maybe you were so turned off by
"The Holy Mountain", you didn't give "Santa Sangre" a chance.
I think "Santa Sangre" is to "The Holy Mountain" as "Mulholland Drive" is
to "Dune". >> Stay informed about: Out-Lynching David Lynch |

I've recently been turned on greatly to the works of Andrei Tarkovsky.
Dubbed in some circles as "THE poet of cinema." -The Mirror- is my
favorite of his.
Stylistically different from Lynch in many respects, there's still so
much about his work that speaks to the viewer without using words or
storyline. >> Stay informed about: Out-Lynching David Lynch |

Interesting sidenote, Jodorowsky was once planning to make a version of
Dune, with Salvador Dali to act...

Me too! I watched "Solaris" a few months ago, and that's one of my "best of
the best". The "Mirror" is also very good - very dream-like.
Just last week, I watched "Nostalgia". I didn't like that one as much as
the other 2 I've seen. It did have some beautiful images, though,
especially in the subterranean pool or whatever that was.
Any other Tarkovsky recommendations? >> Stay informed about: Out-Lynching David Lynch |

Let me put it this way: Tarkovsky has moved into a class that, for me,
was previously occupied only by Kubrick -- i.e., I'd recommend pretty
much anything Tarkovsky has made. Others that he's made that you
don't mention above: -Stalker-, -Sacrifice-, -Andrei Rublev-, and -My
Name is Ivan-. >> Stay informed about: Out-Lynching David Lynch |
