Who would you nominate as the best living horror film director? Give your
reasonings and which you think is their best horror films.

I'm writing a screenplay that will have a large horror element to it and I'd
like to know who you think is the best and their films. My plan is to rent
and learn from them.

That is a good plan. It would take too much time to read
books that offer critical analysis on directors and their
films; better to post a message to a newsgroup.

James Cameron.

Yes, you heard me. James Cameron. I know he's not all that associated with
the genre -- especially after that boat movie -- but _Aliens_ IMHO is a strong
candidate for the finest monster movie ever made. His _Terminator_ films
deserve a mention, too, just for having villains that make good "honorary
monsters".

George A. Romero for the social commentary he's able to punch into zombie
movies. Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead. His
other movies are also interesting, but other than these three, he hasn't made
too many "straight" horror films.
