Recent conversations here have caused me to ponder this. I'm really
intrigued lately by what makes one viewer fall in love with a movie
that others despise. Here are a few things that hook me:
1) Story. A great story, or at least one that I perceive as a great
story, can completely excuse a myriad of shortcomings, as can the
following:
2) Resonance. A movie whose POV, whether emotionally, politically,
morally, etc., resonates with me, makes me want to come back for
more. Special satisfaction in that.
3) Cast. Certain on-screen talent draws me in and keeps me more
interested than films without my favorites. Rains, McCrea, Garson,
Garbo, Depp, just to name a very few, and then there are the "minor"
players I love, such as Ned Sparks & Edna May Oliver, who I'll go out
of my way to see.
4) Favorite topics. WWII, time travel, unrequited love, and the
entire film noir genre are just a few things I'll go out of my way to
see even if the film is otherwise not very good.
I could probably go on and on, but those are just the things that come
to mind in this regard. A highly respected film that doesn't meet any
of the above criteria, e.g. "The Leopard," may be incredibly well
executed but bore me, and therefore I'll never think of it as highly
as others.

It has to have some amazing kung fu in it. Anything with "Shaolin" in
the title and I am soooooo there! >> Stay informed about: What makes you love a movie? |

Hard to say, but the most recent case was 'Fracture' on DVD.
After a few scenes of Ryan Gosling (great in The Believer (2001))
I knew I wanted to see and hear everything he did and said, and
see every reaction on his face. Of course, without good writers
and a fine director like Gregory Hoblit (Primal Fear, Frequency),
an actor might not have such a chance to make a movie so good. >> Stay informed about: What makes you love a movie? |

The film gives me numerous impressions of the personality & the
intellect of the filmmakers, & if those impressions I'm left with
please me, I love the movie! I don't need to be able to suspend
disbelief in the story or characters -- take a Bugs Bunny cartoon, for
example -- but I want to watch the handicraft & think, "What a great
way of seeing something, & what an impressive execution of that
vision!" >> Stay informed about: What makes you love a movie? |

A really good movie engages me so much that I feel I'm watching real life
unfold in real time. The camera and microphone serve only as extensions of
my eyes and ears, so I'm unconcerned with what they see and hear, paying it
no more attention than what I see and hear outside the theater. So, I'm
really not concerned with the art of moviemaking: storyboards and shot
selections, and staging and lighting and all that .. I want a story that so
engrosses me I become part of it, as if it's happening all around me now.. >> Stay informed about: What makes you love a movie? |

I have to be able to sympathize with one/some/all the characters in a
film. If none of the characters have any redeeming qualities, its
like watching a dull newsreel! For example, Gus Van Zant's
"Elephant". Very well done (technically), but there wasn't enough
depth to any of the characters for me to care. >> Stay informed about: What makes you love a movie? |

<< Characters that I want to succeed against *any* obstacles, and
hopefully find happiness. It could be John Cusack and Ione Skye, or
Bogey and Bergman.
Too many current directors rely on kiss kiss-bang bang, and throw
special effects on the screen.
The fundamental things apply... >> >> Stay informed about: What makes you love a movie? |

A movie that suckers me into seeing/feeling a episode of life through
someone else's eyes. >> Stay informed about: What makes you love a movie? |

Well said. I have a good friend, actually a genius who is a nuclear
physicist, who cannot watch a movie that doesn't have a happy ending,
simply because he ALWAYS gets wrapped up in a movie like this and it
crushes him when it turns out badly. Amazing how such a brilliant man
can't separate himself emotionally from the action on the screen.

I recently attended a film festival where I saw one of the worst films
I've seen all year. NOBODY in this clunker was likeable AT ALL. Even
the alleged heroine of the piece was such a snot you just wanted to
slap her. The audience was asked to comment on the films for the
filmmakers' sakes, and I just wrote "Next time try having some
likeable characters." This cannot be overstated. I'm surprised,
however, at the negative comments in this NG recently about
"Elephant." I really enjoyed that one quite a bit and didn't find
most of the characters particularly negative; some, sure, but that's
dramatic tension for you.

Thank you for not saying "Realism." If I want realism, I'll turn off
the TV, get out of the theater, and take a walk in the park. Realism
is me sitting at my computer typing these comments. Movies aren't for
realism.....at least not as a rule.

I'm amazed at how much good music draws me in. I never really thought
about it much until the past couple of years, but a prime example for
me is Kieslowski. His best films have phenomenal music by Zbigniew
Preisner, who also did the score for "Europa Europa." The images are
practically set to his music, and it's a tremendously moving
experience. Not to mention the many music and concert DVDs that
quickly become favorites at my house. >> Stay informed about: What makes you love a movie? |

A good many of the things that have already been mentioned in this
thread (certain actors, certain themes, emotional resonance, at least
one sympathetic character whom I want to succeed against any obstacle,
suspension of disbelief); but if I boil it down to the barest bones of
the thing, the vital ingredient is that I should *care* what happens. I
should desire ardently for a given outcome -- and preferably get it, but
above all it should matter enough to me to make a difference!
