Because he can make two masterpieces as different, and as similar, as
"Eraserhead" and "The Straight Story".

His unpredictability. I never know what's going to happen, but when it
does, it's completely logical. This has only fallen apart for him on a
couple of the films (Wild at Heart, in my opinion).

I'd compare him to the Coen Brothers, but they are much more farcical,
even when they're dealing with dark material.
