Jeff Wexler comments:
I have not used Metacorder personally yet (though I do have tremendous
respect for all the work done by Gallery and have always enjoyed using their
other products) but it is my understanding that it has already been
suggested to use the audio IN on the Mac for TC. I remember someone
mentioning the simple use of the Griffin iMic (USB interface) to access the
Built In Audio on the Mac. Metacorder is quite flexible in the I/O
assignment and routing so I do not believe it will be necessary to tie up an
audio channel from the main hardware interface.
I might also add that the MOTU Traveler (soon to be released) looks to be
the almost ideal audio hardware interface for Metacorder. It is small,
lightweight, bus powered (or external 10-19 volts DC on a standard 4-pin
XLR) and also has some provision for Timecode I/O although I am not quite
sure how this is implemented. There is some indication at the MOTU website
that there is a software based timekeeper/synchronizer incorporated into the
Traveler but it is not so clear at this point what can be done with it.
I will most probably purchase Metacorder when the MOTU Traveler is available
and have this system for use when (and if) I need to do a big multitrack job
and would want to record directly into my PowerBook easily and reliably. I
will use my new Deva as my main recorder on the majority of jobs (I am still
a big fan of a dedicated hardware/software audio recorder that does not
involve consumer operating systems or hardware). Metacorder for me does
fulfill the need on occasion to use a computer directly, even with a
consumer operating system, because of my own personal experience with Mac OS
X and PowerBook portables. It is the combination of really good software
from Gallery and a really good computer operating system that makes it
viable, for me at least, to use a computer, hardware audio interface and
software, to record production sound.
