I'm trying to find out the name of an old B&W movie that I saw when I was kid. There is one scene in it that has stuck with me for over 45 years, yet I don't know what the movie was and I only saw it once.
The important scene is this:
A teenager (I think it was Mickey Rooney but I can't be positive) is in an orphanage. He's been given trust by the authorities of the orphanage in the form of being given a key that unlocks the jail cell-like door that the rest of the orphanage kids are locked up behind at night.
The protagonist is quite proud of being given this trust and responsibility. But one night, while the authorities are out of the building, a fire breaks out. The kids are screaming behind the locked jail cell door, reaching their arms through in desperation to get out. The protagonist, with the key around his neck, quickly runs to unlock the door and save the kids. Unfortunately, after frantically trying, he can't get the door open, and he realizes he's been given a dummy key that was never intended to open anything at all.
Does anybody recognize this? And more importantly, can anyone tell me the name of the movie?
thanks.
