Archived from groups: alt>movies>chaplin (more info?)

I've been shopping for a bigger television, and I figure it makes sense to
make the jump to high definition in the process. I have noticed that some
of these newer high def televisions are better than others at displaying
standard definition material via cable, satellite etc. and some are better
than others at displaying appropriate grayscale/black levels which (needless
to say could be critical when watching an old b&w) like my prized Chaplin
DVDs.

I think I've narrowed the list to a couple of choices, and there's one in
particular that I'm curious about other's experiences:

Does anyone have the Grand Wega III Sony televisions? How do you like your
Chaplin movies on it?

Other television experiences for displaying Chaplin?

Best wishes,
Steve

I'm in the market for a new television too. The Sony Wegas are quite
impressive, but they're always displayed in color, so I can't say how
they'd look in black and white.

If nobody here can help you, you might try talking a friendly dealer
into
running one of your black and white DVDs.

I did just that today. First, let me say that I have a Sony Wega CRT
(old-school technology) and LOVE it for what it is. But what it is right
now is too small (27") and not high def which I'd like to get into.

I wanted to like the Sony Grand Wega series, but the demonstration with my
Chaplin DVD (Image entertainment version) was AWFUL! The salesperson popped
it in a player hooked-up to a Loewe HD CRT and my mind was blown. It was
nearly perfect. I'd suspect the Sony HD CRTs look just as or almost as good,
but when trying Chaplin the newer LCD rear projection units, it was
horrible! There was artificial color appearing in my black and white
movies, detail was lost...it was just useless.

I'll likely be pursuing a Loewe in the very near future. Yeah it's heavy
and old school, but it actually gives me a better picture than the old $500
set I already have...gee...you'd think that would always be the case when
you spend several times that amount, wouldn't you?!?!

I'm not sure I'm reading this post correctly, but I don't think one
can
compare a rear projection TV to a CRT model. They're all getting
better, but rear projection is mainly good for size rather than
absolute picture quality.

In my case I'm looking for multisystem and high def capabilities, but
the
combination isn't common yet. I'm not in a hurry. The old 31 incher
still
works, and I'm about to install a better sound system.

Sure, I didn't expect the LCD rear projection to be as good as the CRT, but
I did expect it to be tolerable! The CRT rear projection units looked
better when properly calibrated, but they don't fit my size constraints.

Anyway, the Loewe is phenomenal--even compared to other CRTs!

Unfortunately, audittioning televisions in a dealer's showroom (even a
high end dealer) is a frustrating and misleading experience.

That is because the sets are almost always shipped with their internal
adjustments *tweaked* so that the picture will look brighter and more
garish than the set sitting next to it.

Any serious videophile, after purchasing a new set, will immediately
have the set calibrated to established standards, because otherwise
you get a VERY noisy and distorted image.

That is also what high end video publications do when they receive a
new television for review. Anytime you are looking at a set that
hasn't been calibrated, you are not getting a true representation of
the set's picture quality.
