Sorry for this basic and odd question.
I searched on internet and on ramps but didn't find an answer which
respond me clearly.
Here's the story.
A friend of mine wanted me my Sounddevices 302 mixer to use with her
Sony PD150.
As she said me that she has a certain person "who knows the sound", so I
didn't explain a lot.
But it's always the same story, neither the certain person obviously
didn't know the exact way to connect to the camera,
so they did some experiment to find the best way...
So she connected to XLR-in of PD150, selected several option (mic in,
line in, attenuate pad, etc.)
and eventually turned on the 48V phantom power of the camera.
She later tell me on telephone that the sound quality is not the superb
one. Still don't know exactly what does it mean.
So, here's my question. Can 48V phantom power hurt the XLR output
circuit of the 302 mixer?
Apparently not, but as I'm not so sure of electronics, I wonder if it
really are. If I recall, 302 output is same as 422.
That means transformer balanced output? Is there something to do with
protection of these kind of thing?

Nothing to worry .
the 150 audio stage is disaster , tell her work with alc on ( hard limiter
only ) fixed input stage ( internal setting)
better s/n since the sound is not going thru some circuits in the camera and
get additional noise
line out from the mixer , + 2dbu reference tone ( internal setting if I
remember correct)on the mixer -20dbfs on the camera
run the picks to +10 at least
wind to off -------------internal menu setting
nr to off ----------------------internal setting

Thank you Oleg.
I also had an answer from Sounddevices' support,
which tells me that there's also a DC protection at output.
If it were my case, I prefer go with double system.
But your recommendation is very clear, I tell her of it.
(I know that you repeated it again and again on this
newsgroup for everyone)
Thank you again.

Don't forget, the 150 also distorts with a nominal +4 dBu input. Even
though it's a balanced line on an XLR, the input really wants to see
-10 dBV for -12 dBFS.

Hi Jay,
With your previous advice in mind, can I ask you what exactly you need to do
(settings) to connect a typical mixer to a Sony PD150? The PD150 has XLR
ins, switchable from Line/Mic/Mic Att. I read Oleg's advice regarding
internal camera settings which is very helpful...just wondering about the
physical hookup. Do you need to pad down the mixers output with a special
cable? Does anyone know if the RCA audio inputs are active in the Camera
Mode?
Thank you Jay for your kind advice.
Best regards,
Dave Mc.

With an SD302, you can set the output lower via the setup menu. It's
the first setup position (indicated by -30 on the meter). Adjust this
down by about 10dB (add the indicated values on left and right meter for
attenuation amount). This selects the amount of attenuation from Line
level on the XLR outputs.
