Dont know if this is the right forum but someone may be able to
advise. Ive been looking at buying a dvd writer, probably of the
pioneer variety as they seem to get very good reviews. But there are
quite a few knocking about. Which is the best?
I also want to dump some stuff from a sky+ box to my pc ,edit out the
adds and make some sort of dvd menu. Any ideas on software
(cheap)which could do this.
Thans in advance for youre advice....

The AO6 and 106D are the same drive (retail vs. OEM). There is a 106RD
which is Acer branded and rumoured not to accept firmware upgrades - not
sure if this is true. They are generally regarded as the leader in the
market and can be had for £84 (Digitalpromo ??). Very robust and simple to
use.

8x writers are available now for ~£110-120 look at eBuyer but not Pioneer
though they get good reviews.

There are 8x +R/RW drives already, which is probably where the confusion
comes from, although IIRC no "official" 8x media. +/- is irrelevant in PC
hardware now anyway, since every company makes a dual format burner.

It does not matter if you buy in US (unless it is an external drive). All
new drives are RPC-2 which is they would only allow you to change the
region 5 times and then lock permanently. You can download firmware to make
the drive RPC-1 (unlimited changes) from the firmware page (google is your
friend). Coding in PAL or NTSC is a function of the software you use for
making your films or videos. All DVD drives can play ntsc or pal discs
(unless they are region locked).

Do region locked ones care what format the picture is?
