Alright, like a lot of you guys, i am hauling around a 442, 744t, 4x
Lectros, Comtek transmitter, batteries and accesories. Until a week
ago, i was using a petrol Pegz 1 bag and loving it. But after looking
at myself in a mirror wearing the bag, i was amazed at how far the
weight was sticking away from me. My lower back was aching after an
hour of shooting and hurting by the end of the day. So i looked at
the different options available, bagwise. THe idea was to get the
weight closer me while being able to keep all the equipment on me. I
decided to go ahead and get a bag made by Camrade for Sound Devices,
the CS-4. The bag has room for a 442 mixer, a 744t and an NP-1
battery ( at the bottom ). It has the attachment loop for a
Portabrace RM bag for wireless. After making all the cables and
playing around with it, i was amazed at the feeling ( mainly lack
of... ). My lower back is not hurting anymore. The main reason is
the fact that the bag is sticking 3 inches less away from me, greatly
reducing the lever effect on my lower back.
Petrol makes really great bag and i do not want to take away anything
from the product, but i guess all the flexibility comes at a price
which my lower back can take anymore.

Would be interesting to know what your complete rig weighs.

No, this is a text-only newsgroup. But there are dozens
of places on the internet to post pictures for free and just
list the URL here. >> Stay informed about: My poor back.... and my solution! |

I agree entirely about the leverage and had exactly the same problem with
the otherwise very nicely designed and made Petrol bag with pretty much the
same equipment and was heading in to a particularly physically demanding job
for several weeks and had do something about it.
So I had a bag custom made by KT Systems (UK) to bring the whole
rig closer in to the body with a broad, padded quick release waist band to
take as much weight as possible and now the leverage has been much reduced -
and this has been much, much better.
I also use a KT harness which is very light and airy and cleverly
designed in that it has quick adjustments both above the arms and under the
arms which makes the pressure on the top of the shoulders adjustable and
some weight is carried by tension across the upper back/lower shoulders
rather than the top of the shoulder, which is great for me because I have
muscles in my shoulder blades which can lock up (like permanent cramp)
after several hours.
The waistband for the bag and the harness have enough range to accomodate
clothing from a teeshirt to all the clothing needed for tens of degrees
below freezing)
I have now managed some 16 hour + days without too much discomfort, which
was not possible before.
