Hi all,
Anyone have experience recording audio on a Nagra IV SJ recorder.
As you know, this particular model was intended for scientific
measurement and it records "direct" to tape, without inserting
emphasis/deemphasis at record/playback, -theoretically- having
excessive tape hiss because of that.
I'd like to know about any real experience with it, or well founded
comments.
It was used a lot to record subsonic sources like very low freq
elephant talk, high frew insect calls, traffic rumble studies, etc.
It's freq resp was 2,5Hz to 35kHz, and DC to 4kHz on the central FM
channel.
Thank you in advance,

The Nagras were all pretty modular--you might be able to find the
correct circuit boards to turn it into an audio recorder. I don't know
if the heads were different from the standard IV-S (it wouldn't have
had the NeoPilot/TC head in any case). I think the meter is different,
as well as the volume controls. In truth, there are so many Nagras
around gathering dust that you could probably find a IV-SL or IVS-TC
(or a IV-S with the "Harvey Mod") pretty cheap these days in good
shape. (Make me an offer.)

We have at least 2 customer's using the IV-SJ to record live events
with those B&K mics. From Classical symphonies and vintage aircraft to
steam locomotives, they both swear it's the best they've ever used.
We also have 2 audiophile clients using their IV-SJ's strictly for
playback of their pre-recorded tapes.
A real microscope into whatever you record or play (for better or
worse!) .
Heads are identical to IV-S.

The IV-SJ can be a great analog machine. Like the other Nagras, they
were made with either the NAB or CCIR pre-emphasis curve.
The main convenienc problem is the non-standard mic preamps and
connectors. You can either use the B&K instrumentation mics it was
designed for or use an external mic pre and go into the line inputs.
The transport mechanics and functions are identical to the other IV-Sx
models.
