Some of it should be. How else do you turn the little ones onto scary stuff
without traumatizing them for life?

My favorite is Dawn of the Dead. I prefer one where there is
a real story to go along with the blood and gore.

It's reached on of its periodic impasses. The Japanese fad is played
out. Torture porn is dead. Both those were a reaction against the
post-Scream ironic era in horror movies, and those post-Scream movies
were a reaction against tired franchise horror and worn out
smisogynist slasher exercises. So someone needs to come up with
something new, which is, like it always is, easier said than done.
The last two horror films that scared me in the theater were Candyman
and The Blair Witch Project so it's not as if I'm expecting to be
*frightened* anytime soon, but it'd be nice if something did come
along that re-energized the genre.

I love horror films, but I haven't seen a single fright flick in the
theatre all year. There's just not a lot out there. Not if you try to exercise
a little taste, anyway.

But of course whatever quality control problems the genre has right now will
be solved as soon as they hire me to write for them. :-)

most of the good films are asian or are straight to DVD indies. The studios
are into comic books and endless remakes

I have never, and will never admit Scream as a horror movie. It was
suspense.

I find most Asylum films entertaining. A recent indy film I reviewed that I
found quite good is DARK REMAINS.
