I saw Blair Witch and couldn't understand what the fuss was all about.
I was thoroughly disappointed. I didn't see what others were seeing.
Then I heard that many people thought it was REAL! They thought
they were watching something akin to a "snuff" movie, they thought
they were witnessing real supernatatural events and murders in the
backwoods.
It WOULD be scary if that were true, or you believed you were
witnessing actual events. For example, if you saw the events of
9/11/01 and were told it was a movie, then many people's attitude
would be "it's just another Bruce Willis flick." But knowing it's
real, obviously one attitude turns towards the deeply tragic.
I've seen heads lopped off in movies over a million times. Check
out the "Night Of the Living Dead" or the "Evil Dead"
series. It's kind of fun. But when a real guy's head is cut off over
the internet, as it was a few years ago in Iraq, then the sight is
grisly, truly frightening and horrific. You never want to see it again.
I knew BW was pure fiction, horror for fun, despite the rumors
that it was "true." So when I saw it I thought the joke was on the
audience. I don't recall a single spooky element in it. These guys
really got over. However, the rumor was that the people in the
film were real people, and the film you were watching was
actual footage left behind by people that disappeared into
the dark and creepy forest night. The producers were clever.

Descent was very good .
The title seemed to cover their physical descent into the cave and their
moral and psychological descent as events unfolded .

Yet another film that has divided the opinions of horror fans. I thought
it was mediocre at best.

I am not a big fan of slasher movies but this Australian movie got me
curious about what Australians think is scary.
"Wolf Creek" left me feeling sick and depressed knowing that characters like
the old man living in the abandoned mine can exist and carry out their
serial slaughters with impunity. The flick left an indelible scar on my
psyche as the pure cruelty was over the top.

There are far more disturbing films than Wolf Creek out there.

It's a pretty full-on film. I think it's scarier if you grew up hearing all
the reports of the real backpacker murders it's (vaguely) based on. It's
quite a visually stunning film, and it certainly succeeds at making the
audience feel very uncomfortable, but yeah - probably more effective on us

There are at least several scary movies to see for Halloween:
Any of the classic 1930s/'40s Universal Pictures horror series is always an
excellent start.
Additionally:
The Screaming Skull (1958)American International Pictures (AIP)
The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake (1959) Robert E. Kent Productions
(The) House On Haunted Hill (1959)William Castle Productions
The Innocents (1961)Achilles
The Shining (1980) Hawk Films Ltd
Poltergeist (1982) Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)
