Please don't laugh, but I have to put a scratch track on a POS consumer
camera. It has a 3.5mm stereo plug mike input, AVC, no level controls. I've
got a 744T and a 302. Is it feasible to use the headphone out on the 302
with the volume turned down to get an appropriate level?

Bob,

which camera (brand, type) will be the victim?
Your feed will be wired or wireless ?
Without that information its difficult to help.

What about using 302 tape/mix-output,TAE-3 to
XLR3-adaptor,-30(40)dB-barrel,
XLR3 to 3,5mm mini jack ? Maybe a way to save your 302 HP-output.

All the best,

If you dont want to spend the $50 bucks for the cable you can make one.
XLR pin 1 to sleeve of mini plug --pin 2 to tip (or ring) for single
channel -- pin 2 to tip and ring for mono 2 channel. Use the mic out
level on your mixer. -- no problem. Do a test record to find proper
levels.

If it is truly a scratch track, just turn on the on-board mic. Of
course if it is to be edited from, despite the superior sound of the
double-system, then follow the above directions.

Thanks. It's really just a messy wiring problem. I was hoping someone could
recommend an inline pad that would take the line-out on the 302 down to mike
level.

Then you want a Beachtek or Sign Video box (
http://www.equipmentemporium.com/videoaudio.htm ).

These are just the solution you are looking for. I used my Sign Video
box with my MixPre, though it has been a couple of years that I have
encountered a camera that didn't have proper XLR inputs.

On the plus side: it's apt to sound so awful that pix editors won't
assume it's the actual track. Well, most of the ones I work with might
not...

On the negative one: between room verb and acoustic delay in long
shots, it's real hard to use it as a sync reference.
