ok, nothing serious, but i'm thinking there are just a few people out
there hoping/expecting SD to announce a new recorder/mixer device
sometime before 2010. so this is a call for predictions about this
device. predictions/guesstimates or whatever they are will inevitably
contain an element of wishful thinking but lets try to make it has
realistic as possible. so any (if people want to play) predictions
should state:
mic level inputs.
total inputs.
total isos.
mix down (if any).
any other outstanding features.
model number.

i guess i should kick off:
6 mic i/ps.
10 line i/ps.
10 isos.
stereo mix down.
NO internal drive!
6 card slots with every imaginable assignment possible, inc. mirroring
and separate mix down.
drivers for external disk that will mirror on the run.
ethernet connection.
wifi/wlan.
lcd display with video i/p option (ok, i know the video but will never
happen).
remote fader panel.
d sub connector for outputs and digital inputs (to keep the box
compact).
model number: 1066. (yes, i gave it 6 card slots just so i could call
it that, for some reason).

I would be more than happy with-

4 inputs (mic/line)
4 track recording to CF/SDHC slot(s)
L/R outputs for camera send
cup holder

I could go on, but basically...I want a 442 and a 744T mashed together
harmoniously!! And, I really like the Cantar system (PDA/bluetooth
link) for notes, gain setting, track assignment, etc. All for under
$3000 ;)

i forgot:
live mp3 conversion/mirroring to media.
more realistic than geo-tagging (for the metadata and keeping track of
how many miles production make you schlep), neither hard to do.
wlan-casting/streaming of live audio would effectively make it a mini
ob sound unit.
i know, i'm going into gaga land, it will probably just be a 442 and a
744 smashed together in a box costing only a bit less than the 2
separates. they seem to be about to retire the 442, so that would
indicate a similarly capable mixer. having said that a 10 track with 6
mic pres would not leave recent buyers of 442s feeling *)_(* as it
would complement a 10:6 well. i am biased though, i don't see the
point of 4track set-up. if you get a reality gig or anything more
demanding than 2 or 3 radios and boom you're going to end up with a
back breaking bag of clobber round you neck - again. unless it's a bad
it shouldn't be that hard to safely mix 2 or 3 radios and a boom to 2
channels so why record 4?

As a field recordist with an interest in moving up to surround
recording,I am most interested in a 744 with four mic pres! I would
upgrade to one of those in a snap. Or, some very clever form-factor
outboard add on for the 744 that uses the exact same signal path as
the internal pres, and can be 'controlled' via their cat5 link.

They do seem to have painted themselves into a corner a bit with the
naming convention, I mean, personally, I would have named the 744 the
724: 7 series, 2 pres, 4 channels. Maybe the 7X4?

The Grace Design's Lunatec V3 fit's nicely under the 744t, and I can't
hear the difference. But I guess you need a way to power the extra preamp.

I want the new SD mixer/recorder we are fantasizing about to have an
optional remote fader panel a la Cantarem (or Filmtech).

Slightly off-topic:

Does anyone know what happened to the PSC Miranda? Is it vaporware or
is it ever coming out? I haven't heard anything about it in years.

CF media ( dual slot for redundant system )
Internal NP1 battery compartment with Hirose DC outs for power
distribution.
Hardware PFL switch on all channel

Rather NOT have the internal NP1.
