Does anyone know whether Barrymore made the breathtaking leap down the
stairway in his fight with Montagu Love? Or whether it was Montagu Love
who was landed on? It's quite spectaculer in any event.

There was a previous posting here that indicated that John Barrymore
did the stunt, something I doubt, even if wires were used. Just my
opinion, but Barrymore wasn't tall enough or in good enough physical
condition to make the stunt look good. John Carradine commented when
he first saw Barrymore, he was surprised that Barrymore didn't look as
tall in person (at 5'7") as on the screen. In 1948's Adventures of
Don Juan, Jock Mahoney doubled for Errol Flynn and made the leap down
the grand staircase look easy. But Mahoney was 6'4" and in great
shape. In 1926 when he starred in Don Juan, Barrymore was 44 years
old and a pretty heavy drinker. Even in 1926, Hollywood technicians
were expert in creating the appearance that the star did his own
stunts. Paul Malvern, discussing how he doubled Barrymore in the
rooftop flight across Paris in 1927's The Beloved Rogue (In the Hazard
of the Game segment of the Hollywood series) tells how the stunt was
split into parts then shown edited together. Malvern, a former circus
acrobat, was up to the task of putting on striped tights and flying
through the air off a springboard to be the stunt double for Barrymore
in Don Juan. All of this is speculation. One solution to the
question would be if someone finds outtakes of the filming of this
scene, very unlikely but you never know for sure.

Many thanks Gerry, for your erudition! While checking out John Barrymore
on IMDb, I also looked up Diana, his daughter, and reading her bio is like
going to a horror movie. Poor gal got dad's alcohol gene, and it ruined
her brief life. If you don't mind reading a downer, it's fascinating, like
watching a train wreck.

I took a careful look at that scene, both the back flip over the rail
& Barrymore's leap.
Even watching frame by frame (so easy to do with a DVD recorder), the
back flip (which was very good) could have been done with a double.
This is because the camera image changes.
As for Barrymore's leap, it would appear that he actually did it
because the camera never leaves him. From the instant the leap begins,
there is no break in the action (or camera image) when the sword
fighting resumes below and it is clearly Barrymore.
The man who lands on the floor certainly does not appear to be a tall
man, and he certainly doesn't appear to have the 6' 4" height
(coincidentally, the same as mine).

A shorter and lighter person (like Barrymore) could have more easily
done the stunt.

Thanks, Rich. Now for the other half of the question...
Was the leapee actually Montagu Love? As for me, I'd sooner be the leaper
than the guy he landed on!

Now that I've already given the wrong response (and thanks for your
patience with me), perhaps the following scene where Barrymore leaps on
the other guy is what you were referring to.
In that scene, it still appears to be Barrymore leaping, but onto a
professional catcher. I say that because you watch as he (the catcher)
prepares, and then reaches up to catch Barrymore who's coming towards
him. It's only after he's caught Barrymore that he begins to fall
backwards as they continue in the mock fighting, rolling down the stairs
(a much easier thing to do).
Since there is a camera switch shortly after they land and Barrymore's
opponent hasn't really shown his face, that could have still been the
stunt double that caught Barrymore, ad the point where there was a
change. But it does look like Barrymore did this stunt also. Hope this
keeps me on your good side.
I think the professional catcher would rather catch Barrymore, than
someone a lot bigger.

Me, I enjoyed the action that was enhanced by the Vitaphone sound of
sabers clashing.

I also enjoyed seeing that some of the girls in the earlier scene were
wearing thongs.

Try to see her in THE FIGHTING COWARD (1924) where she looks quite sweet.

We should all have a matron that looks like that...
