I saw only the Grapevine VHS & I enjoyed it. It's more enjoyable once you
realize that it's mostly a send-up & Everybody looks splendid. Lowell
Sherman is in fine form as the king.
BTW- Grapevine did a Wicked thing with their soundtrack. When Valentino's
character sings on screen, they play his recording of "Kashmiri Song"

In all fairness the Kashmiri song is harder that it sounds- a lot of legato
(hard to keep in tune and steady) and some high notes. It probably wasn't
the best choice, though considered romantic and "Eastern" enough to fit the
Shiek image. He does massacre "Il Reliquario", but in a different way, and
at least he puts some spirit into it. He might have been better served with
a popular song, or something Italian, but it wouldn't have suited the
public.

Yes, as a long time opera fan, I don't think Valentino sounds that
bad. No, perhaps he wasn't bound for the Met anytime soon, but I bet
with some good training he could have developed a pleasing baritone
singing voice.
It's kind of like Josephine Baker, who sounds like a somewhat,
unfocused and reckless singer on her recordings from the
mid-1920's(Although she does capture the spirit and exhuberance of the
era) yet by the 30's had developed a beautiful sheen and had acquired
a semi-operatic tone with a lovely upper register(Just listen to her
sing "Haiti" from Zou-Zou: http://www.redhotjazz.com/bakerpp.html).
I'm not sure what musical training she had, if any, but the change was
remarkable.

I've never been to Cinecon, but want to attend. Has anyone ever run
Corinne Griffith's The Virgin's Sacrifice or Classified? I believe the
former was recently restored/preserved-by perhaps GEH?. I'm dying to
see more early Francis X. Bushman, and J Warren Kerrigan. Anna Q.
Nilsson is another star I've seen woefully little of.
I'd second Forbidden Paradise. Have many of Madge Bellamy's Fox films
survived aside from the famous ones such as Iron Horse or Lazybones?
And I'd love to see more Alma Rubens during her peak. Do many of her
films exist? So far, I've only seen her last two films and a few of
her early Triangle appearences, plus a 1914 film, Gangsters and the
Girl she made with Charles Ray.
I really want to shoot for Cinecon next year regardless, but if any of
the above mentioned films/stars made it onto the program it would
certainly tip the scales considerably in favor of it.

Wow, it took me over thirty years but now I finally understand the
origin of the title of one of my favourite SJ Perelman's pieces: Pale
Hands I Loathe. If anyone else has ever written a stream of
consciousness piece about a guy obsessed with pecans and hands, I'm
not aware of it.
"<The> Road to hell <is> paved with soft white hands".

You'd think there would be a projectable 35mm print out there
somewhere.

Does anyone know why Forbidden Paradise wasn't included in either of
two big Lubitsch retrospectives of the last 10 years--Film Forum in
NYC and Toronto? Rights issues? Expense? (I think it's at Eastman
House.) Print availability? It's been written in great detail about by
the likes of Scott Eyman, Jeanine Basinger and Sabine Hake, but it's
never screened anywhere.

It did run at a Cinecon back in the '80s; my recollection is that it
was okay but no blockbuster. If a print exists and is available, I
think enough time has passed to warrant a repeat.
