A hand full of O.T. films; Mike Leighs brilliant film All or Nothing
(2002) sprang to mind but on second thoughts most of them were
employed in one way or another. But they were firmly in the "loser"

The guys in Breaking Away may be unemployed, but they work too hard to
be called layabouts.
Ethan Hawke in Reality Bites is a great slacker layabout.
One might include Clerks, but they do have jobs...

In one of the W.C. Fields, the son of the 2nd wife lies around the
house all day, sometimes just pretending to "look for work" but mostly
expecting his step-sister & his step-dad (Fields) to keep him fed &
housed. Can't remember which Fields.

Given its enormous popularity & iconic status, I'm surprised they
never made a "Graduate 2: Plastics"

Is that the one where the spoiled kid and his mother run down W C all
day long and his beauty of a daughter defends him? Ma says sonny could
never expect to find a job with his step-dad's reputation and the kid
frowns, whines piteously, "I don't think I should even try."

Plastics.
We sure saw him do some hustling, though, including one long run to and
fro the church from the time he ran out of gas.
*Easy Rider.* One surly, the other mopish, just ride them cycles down
the highway and smoke dope at camp and then here come the rednecks and
their shotgun.

That's the one, Tim! My Fields box is in the other room, & I avoid
IMDb these days. I think it's "Man on the Flying Trapeze" or
"Everything That Rises Must Concierge"
It's a funny, funny movie ... natch. Burglars invade the basement, &
fields goes down there & joins them in song.

Plus up & down Highway 101 between Santa Barbara & San Fran in record
time. He'd NEVER be able to do that these days.
