In case you missed it, TCM ran the "new" version of The Cameraman
today in honor of BKs birthday. At least I am guessing this is how it
will look on the upcoming DVD set. It is an improvement even over the
laser disc version. Most notably the baseball scene finally looks
good. The new score is pleasure compared to the old piano score.

I saw this as well and agree that the new score is a lot better than
the old one. The new version is still missing footage. When I heard
that the film was being restored I thought that area might be bridged
using stills like the "new" GREED. That aside, it looks great and is
light years ahead of the old VHS version that came out many years ago.
I also caught a bit of SPITE MARRIAGE which will also be on DVD. It
also looks cleaned up with better sound than the VHS version.

Which footage is still missing from THE CAMERAMAN, and does this footage
still exist anywhere?

The footage involves Buster going out on his first film assignment and
screening his work for the news team. It occurs in the first third of
the film where Buster rushes out of the news office after Sally
enourages him to go out and shoot anything. The film abruptly cuts to
footage of a woman diving of a board, a battleship crusing down 5th
Ave., etc. and we're now in the screening room watching Buster's work.
All prints I've seen are missing this section. The first time I saw
this film was in a theater. When this jump occured, we started yelling
at the projectionist because we thought he mixed up the reels.

This is probably a stretch, but couldn't the gap be patched up by
inserting circa 1928 stock footage that matches what is shown in the
screening room, as well as adding an intertitle or two?
