> It's impossible to get all of the rare stuff I have on DVD !!
Do you still have some of this stuff languishing around on tape?
It'd be a good idea to transfer it onto some sort of digital format @ some
point, maybe. Be it DVD or just files on your HDD, it'd be a much safer
way to store it. Tape wears out, whereas disk files just lurk about,
waiting to be copied (and BACKED UP!). It'd be nasty to revisit some
not-oft-touched VHS tape at some point in the future, and find that it'd
gone tits-up.
Coming from a IT support background as I do, I can relate many stories of
people thinking they were doing "the right thing" by archiving data onto
3.5" disks for "back-up". Only to find out those damn things - these days
- seem to have a lifetime somewhat similar to the old wax drums that the
first audio records had. And I have about as much faith in VHS tapes.
The bottom line is that - be it VHS or floppy disk or some other
cheap-to-manufacture-medium - it's best not to rely on them lasting
forever. Store the data on HDD (which *is* very reliable), and make
off-site copies.
