Hi there,
I have been working in production sound for 2.5 years now, but most of
my experience is as a boom operator. Over the last few months I have
increasingly started doing ENG gigs, and people occasionally request
wireless links to camera. I have been able to set them up, and have
experienced no problems or complains, however, I know that I am
definately not setting them up PROPERLY, as I have to turn up the gain
on the Tx much higher than I believe i should.
So, if someone could lend me a bit of their expertise, what is the
best step-by-step process to set up a wireless link. I use a PSC
Alphamix, with two Lectrosonics 211s, and usually connecting to a
Panasonic Varicam.
I look forward to the day (perhaps next year) when I can invest in the
Zaxcom stereo link, but until then I need to rely on the Lectros....
Thanks very much in advance!!!

Try line level out of your mixer and line level into the camera. make
sure you are wiring the transmitter cables properly. Get the PDF for
the UM200C or which ever transmitter you are using from www.lectrosonics.com
under manuals. You should be able to run your transmitters at about 3
o'clock on the transmitter. Next set your camera audio pots to the
middle then back off the Lectrosonics UCR211's so that the tone level
gets to where you like -18 or -20 depending on your location in the
world.

I wouldn't recommend running Lectro transmitters with connection
configurations that would force one to open up all the way to the 3'oclock
position for proper levels as that's quite a bit of added gain and resultant
noise from the transmitters. I have mine wired up so I'm operating at around
9am (barely cracked) when I see the first faint glow in the -20 light on the
receivers for 0db on my mixer (SD442). This gives me the best S/N ratio for
the RF link. Since that's my standard mixer reference level there's no
chance of me needing more headroom than that from the transmitters. Feeding
them the hottest signal I can get away with optimizes their operation.

correction...should read faint glow of the -20 light on the "transmitters"
not receivers.
